When I sit at my desk designing a journal cover or arranging the details of a new collection, I rarely think first about color or composition. Instead, I begin wondering where that piece might eventually live.

Objects begin as things. Time allows them to become companions.

Every Lace & Grit collection begins with a subject that invites a closer look.

It might be a pressed botanical specimen, an old apothecary label, a woodland creature observed along a quiet path, a bird standing at the edge of the water or an artifact preserved inside a museum cabinet.

Before a piece becomes part of a room, it begins as a collection of questions. What story does this subject carry? What details deserve to be preserved? What colors, materials and textures will allow that story to feel at home in the present?

Some designs begin with pages of notes and references. Others begin with a single image or phrase that quietly suggests an entire world.

The work is not finished when the design is complete. In many ways, that is when its next life begins.

Every finished piece begins with observation, research and a collection of small details waiting to become a story.

The Lace & Grit collections have never been about filling a room.

I have always believed a home becomes more interesting when it reflects the people who live there rather than the latest decorating trend.

That is why so many of our collections are inspired by natural history, antique archives, field journals, apothecary traditions and the quiet beauty of everyday observation.

These subjects ask us to slow down. They invite us to notice the shape of a leaf, the markings on a bird’s wing, the worn surface of an old instrument or the handwritten note tucked inside a forgotten book.

They remind us that wonder is often found in the things we nearly overlook.
